Please stand by….
We’ve all heard those words before. And usually we don’t mind doing it. Especially if it means lunch is coming.
But sometimes standing by can be a bad thing. A very bad thing.
My recent visit to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in DC reminded me that the Nazis did not have to convince all of Germany to join in their evil. In fact, evil seldom demands our participation.
It asks only for our silence.
As long as the evil didn’t affect them, most people did choose to stand by in silence. A few heretics refused.
But look around the office, home, church, or community each day and you’ll see similar indifference. As long it doesn’t affect them. Or you. “Hey, it’s not my problem.”
Until it is. And then it’s too late.
Don’t stand by. Stand up. Speak out.
